Temples Overview

Built during the Ptolemaic Kingdom between 237 and 57 BC, the Temple of Horus at Edfu is generally regarded to be the best-preserved of the Ancient Egyptian sanctuaries , the temple is one of the most impressive feats of construction completed during the Ptolemaic era and is one of the best places to visit to understand the incredible ability of Egypt’s temple builders. Although built during the Hellenistic reign the temple embodies the traditional architecture of ancient Egypt and is dedicated to the worship of the Egyptian god Horus. Several of the inscriptions inside the temple describe the “Sacred Drama.” The story of the the conflict between Horus, the deity of the fertile Egyptian lands near the Nile, and Seth, the deity of the surrounding Egyptian desert, as Horus seeks revenge for the murder of his father, Osiris. This story was ceremoniously reenacted by the ancient Egyptians each year at the temple complex.
