Temple Overview

The complex known as Karnak Temple was the largest religious building ever constructed in Egypt. In reality this temple is a ity of temples , constructed over a period of 2000 years  and covering about 200 acres (1.5 km by 0.8 km). The immense size of the complex, as well as its various architectural, artistic, and linguistic details make it an invaluable historical site and resource for understanding the evolution of ancient Egypt. The site counted as many as twenty temples and chapels and was known as  Ipet-isu—or “most select of places”—by the ancient Egyptians , it became a place of pilgrimage for nearly 2,000 years, the gods worshipped at Karnak range from some of the earliest Egyptian deities to some of the latest, thus offering an impressive presentation of ancient Egyptian religious practices and beliefs.
